How Leroy Garrett Felt Returning to The Challenge Weeks After Daughter Aria’s Birth

When Leroy Garrett was suiting up to compete in The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras, his fiancée Kam Williams was facing an even more grueling task at home.
The Real World: Las Vegas alum turned up for his 13th go-round on the MTV reality juggernaut mere weeks after Kam, 29, gave birth to their daughter Aria this past February. And despite that, the Are You the One? star—known as Killa Kam for her elimination skills—urged her future husband to go and kill it.
"Kam gave me the confidence to go," Leroy explained to E! News' Francesca Amiker in an exclusive interview.
Between the newborn and their eldest, now 2-year-old son Kingston, "I was super like, 'I don't know if I should go,'" he admitted. "And she's like, 'Nah.'"
For Leroy, that one move totally flipped the game for him.
"When your partner is saying, 'Hey, you could go do this,' that's the only thing that matters," explained the 39-year-old. "So no part of me while I was there was worried, because I knew that I had a great mom at home taking care of my babies."
And confident in his support system, the dad of two wasn't about to risk the ire of host T.J. Lavin by quitting.
As Leroy put it, "I was just thinking, 'I need to get this money for my family.'"
Regardless if he nabs the $1 million up for grabs on Battle of the Eras—which sees the franchise's most beloved stars team up with others from their era, or the seasons when they first started competing—Leroy is determined to eventually emerge a champ.
Having made it to the finals in five of his 12 seasons, he's grown tired of his always-a-bridesmaid status.
"I want to win," he stressed. "I’m tired of f--king losing. I want the money."
But even without a ring, Leroy—set to return to his native Michigan with his bride-to-be and their family—is grateful for the decade-plus he's been able to compete.
"My very first season, everybody was like, 'This is going to be the last season,'" said Leroy of competing on 2011's Rivals fresh off his stint in the Real World house. "And I'm like, 'I just got here!' And now umpteen seasons later, we're still going."
His onscreen and IRL pal Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio has a theory about why the collection of Real World and Road Rules vets—later joined by standouts from Big Brother, Survivor, Are You the One? and other reality series—have been able to live out their dreams for so long.
"We’re like one of those bands that was super famous in the '80s and then somehow was able to reinvent themselves in the '90s, and then again in the 2000s," Johnny explained to E! News. "And we're still reinventing ourselves."
Because while there's no shortage of reality stars willing to, say, eat a dead water rat in the hopes of making some cash, the Challenge crew have held onto their fanbase for the better part of three decades.
"There are people who have been following me since I was out of college," noted Johnny. "Our fans are the most loyal fans out there. They've stuck with us. That's one of the main reasons why the show has been as successful for as long as it is. We might not be the trendiest or the flashiest, but we are 100 percent the grittiest. And that's why we're still here."
